Original movie posters and lobby cards were created exclusively to promote a film. Their bold designs and audacious marketing seduced millions of filmgoers across the world.
Tragically the majority of these were discarded by cinemas shortly after a films release. During World War II there was a legal requirement for all posters and lobby cards to be pulped due to paper shortages. The few posters and lobbys which survive this period are nothing short of miraculous.
Since the 1960s/1970s film enthusiasts started paying more attention to these lost artefacts, and the phenomenon of collecting movie memorabilia was born.
Because posters and lobby cards were intended for display purposes most will show signs of use and wear. Few, if any, remain in perfect condition. Virtually all posters prior to the 1990s were folded before being distributed to cinemas. In some cases people have rolled these in order to reduce the effect of creasing.
At Silver Screen Originals we believe the best judge of a posters condition is the buyer. For that reason we have photographed the front and back of each poster carefully so you can judge for yourself its condition. There is a magnifying tool on each listing to help examine each image up close.
The majority of items we sell are graded ‘Very Good’ with just a few that safely qualify as ‘Mint’. Below we have outlined our simple grading system.
MINT
Unblemished, no pin holes, tears or creases. Colours are strong and the poster looks as fresh as the day it was created.
VERY GOOD
Light handling wear which has not compromised the poster or lobby card artwork. Pin holes and tape marks, if present, are minimal. No paper loss or heavy creasing.
GOOD
Heavier wear to borders, minor paper loss, heavier creasing and/or some fading to the artwork.
FAIR
Destructive paper loss, heavy tears and/or staining.
In a few instances we may apply small pieces of professional acid free repair tape to secure a simple split or tear in a poster or lobby card. This is done to prevent a tear from spreading. It can be easily removed by a conservator if the poster or lobby is being linen backed.
